Mining
Ashton Bennett have recently undertaken investigation and stabilisation of shallow mine workings and of a deep mine shaft in Wrexham by drilling and grouting. Drilling required a suitable platform to be constructed to support the rig and drillers were harnessed to a stable building for safety. Following stabilisation recommendations were made for design of suitable foundations for a housing development.
Drilling was undertaken on a proposed development site in Barnsley to assess the risk of shallow mining and to design stabilisation of the ground.
This 1m wide drilling rig was recently used to investigate for shallow mining during construction of a residential care home in Sheffield. Ashton Bennett were brought in at a late stage of construction to assess the risks and predicted a mine roadway beneath the site. The work was undertaken in restricted space and the majority of boreholes were angled to encounter the mined coal seam and mine roadway beneath the building. The voids encountered were stabilised by insertion of grout to ensure stability of the overlying ground to support the structure.
